Rutgers University Habitat for Humanity works tirelessly to combat the lack of sustainable and affordable housing in the community. To do this, they have developed a three-pronged model to address the universal issue of improper shelter including service, fundraising and advocacy. They also attend service based workshops at RU, seek local donors, and have partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Plainfield and Middlesex County. By utilizing all of these assets, they effectively tackle the lack of proper shelter on a communal and global level. On March 13th, 2016 five families were handed the keys to their brand new homes. The organization donated $100,000 to this project and served thousands of hours on the construction site over the past 3 years. They also seek to provide endless opportunities for students volunteers to grow. The skills learned on their builds are not limited to construction and fundraising; students develop leadership, empathy, and foster an awareness for global issues.
