Umar has been an active part of the RU community since his first year, taking on roles that often do not get noticed but are essential for the maintenance and establishment of a community. Umar has been an active part of leadership within the Muslim Student Association, Rutgers Jumu’ah and Prayer Space, and an active participant in all other initiatives put forward by the Muslim community at RU. But what is special about Umar is his service behind the scenes. Umar particularly has taken roles like setup, clean up, vision planning, hospitality, and other roles that often get little recognition but have significant impact and take lots of time and effort. Most recently, Umar was placed in charge of Islam Awareness Week, probably the biggest effort put forward by the Muslim community at Rutgers and is a culmination of a years’ worth of informative, motivational, service-based, and social events that are put on by and for the Muslim community at Rutgers. Umar was able to galvanize and motivate a team to put on one of the best programs that IAW has ever produced, involving a diverse group of students that were not used to this style of activism at any point in their Rutgers experience.
